MSP Automates Client Onboarding Beyond Rewst Defaults

A California-based MSP expanding its client base and onboarding volume. The team adopted Rewst but still relied on manual checklists to complete user onboarding across varied client environments.
The Challenge
Rewst accelerated onboarding, but the default crate could not handle client-specific variations or integrations outside the platform. Several steps still required manual intervention, which slowed onboarding and introduced inconsistency.
Key gaps included IT Glue password handling, Microsoft 365 group assignment, and provisioning in third-party tools like Slack and Zoom. Engineers had to switch tools to finish onboarding, increasing time and error risk.

What We Did
We extended Rewst without modifying the original onboarding crate. Instead, we created plug-and-play sub-workflows that the main workflow could call in sequence. This preserved the core crate while adding client-specific automation paths.
We built custom IT Glue password creation, automated M365 group assignments using org variables, and added API-driven provisioning for Zoom and Slack. The result was a modular onboarding flow that worked across multiple client environments.
Results
- Automated IT Glue password creation inside onboarding
- M365 group assignment pre-selected by user type
- Slack + Zoom provisioning added via API
- Reusable sub-workflows across client orgs
- Core Rewst crate preserved for supportability
Outcomes
- End-to-end onboarding with fewer manual steps
- Consistent onboarding across client environments
- Reduced context switching for engineers
- Faster onboarding with lower error rates
- Reusable automation that scales to new clients
